Definitely the best day of the trek so far!  Our skipping Machermo yesterday has given us an extra day in the Gokyo valley, so we’re hiking up to the fourth and fifth lakes to lookout called Scoundrel’s Viewpoint.

The hike itself wasn’t terribly tough, and was full of some of the most amazing scenery I’ve ever been privileged to see.   It had snowed the previous night which meant that our 7:30 am start gave us the first footprints in the snow.  Each step forward was another amazing vista until we finally arrived at our destination called Scoundrel’s Viewpoint.  No one seems to know where the name came from, but at the very least the viewpoint is accurate.  From the viewpoint, you can see 4 8000 meter peaks including Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu, but unfortunately Everest was covered in clouds.

After we headed back, I’d thought about heading up to do an evening hike of Gokyo Ri itself, but the clouds were coming in pretty quickly so I ended up climbing to the ridge behind the town and listening to the glacier calve for an hour or so…pretty spectacular!
